On the 7th May 2017, eleven UWAC novices participated in the West Midlands Archery Society Open Novice Tournament, hosted by the Royal Leamington Spa Archery Society. The Tournament, which was attended by nearly 40 archers from 15 different clubs, consisted of a Western round, involving 4 dozen arrows at both 60 and 50 yards.
The friendly, light-hearted atmosphere and brilliant sunshine made for a fantastic day, during which novices were able to gain valuable experience of shooting at an external competition. For many of the archers present, this was also their first competitive venture of the outdoor season.
And what a fantastic start to the season it was, with UWAC archers claiming first place titles in both the Gents and Ladies Recurve categories, as well as Gents Barebow - every category in which UWAC novices were competing!
Sam Armstrong took gold for the Gents Recurve with an impressive score of 728, besting his rival Alex Ridler from the University of Birmingham Archery Club (UBAC) by more than 20 points. In the Ladies Recurve category, Sarah Allaway was also awarded first place with a score of 622 while fellow archer Sumina Kasuji narrowly missed out on a top three finish with a respectable 398 points. Meanwhile, with a score of 371, barebowist Daniel Prinsloo was able to more than double the score of his closest competitor and secure yet another first-place position.
Overall, the day was a huge success for UWAC’s novice archers and proved to be a strong start to the outdoor season. With BUCS Outdoors just around the corner, everyone at UWAC is undoubtedly looking forward to seeing our novices continue to go from strength to strength.
